- Description
- Globally, trauma is a leading cause of death and disability among those 45 years and younger and deaths from road trauma contribute to approximately 25%. Although there are large discrepancies in national trauma incidence and survival, within low- and middle-income countries, approximately 85% of road deaths, 90% of disability-adjusted life years lost, and 96% of all children killed, are as a result of road trauma. In economic terms, the cost of injuries following road trauma is substantial and estimated to be 1% of gross national product in low-income, 1.5% in middle-income, and 2% in high-income countries. The human consequences are also significant, with 80% of major trauma survivors experiencing injury-related disability at 12 months.
